Good to know
Preparing your file
What is bleed?
When paper is trimmed after printing, the blade can shift by a millimetre or two. If a background colour or image runs to the edge, the design is extended past the trim line so no white strip is left. Printers usually ask for 2–3 mm on each side.
What is the safe area?
Anything that must not be cut, such as text and logos, should sit in from the edge. Leave at least 3–4 mm on a business card and 10 mm on a poster.
How should the file be delivered?
Printers usually ask for a PDF in CMYK at 300 DPI, with text converted to outlines and bleed included. For large prints such as posters and roll‑ups, 100–150 DPI is enough.
