AIDesigning with AI
Can AI design a logo?
Some tools produce dozens of logos in seconds. But will they work for your business? What AI can and can't do when it comes to logos.
Short answer: AI produces images that look like logos. The logo a brand actually uses is more than an image. Knowing the difference tells you where AI helps and where it doesn't.
What it does well
Speed at the idea stage. Describe "a warm, handmade-feeling emblem for a coffee shop" and you can see many directions within minutes. It's a good way to find out what you want, or what you don't.
Explaining to a designer. If you can't put the look you have in mind into words, a few generated images make the conversation easier. Use them as a reference, not as the order.
Where it falls short
The file. Most tools give you a pixel image (PNG, JPG). A logo has to look just as sharp on a shop sign, a vehicle wrap, a business card and a tiny app icon, and that takes a vector file. A pixel image breaks up as you enlarge it, and converting it to vector by hand usually means redrawing the logo. Our logo file guide explains which file goes where.
Lettering. These tools still often draw letters broken, missing or inconsistent. On a logo that carries your brand name, that's not acceptable.
Consistency. A logo doesn't live alone: it needs a one-colour version, horizontal and stacked versions, and a simplified version for small sizes. AI struggles to produce these versions of the same logo consistently; each attempt draws something slightly different.
Originality. A model learns from millions of images it has seen. What it produces can resemble another brand's logo, and it won't tell you. The copyright and trademark status of AI-generated images also varies from country to country and is still debated. If you plan to register your logo as a trademark, talk to a trademark attorney.
Thinking. A logo distils what your business says to whom. How you stand apart from competitors, what your customers will trust, where the logo will be used: an image tool can't answer these questions.
When is it enough?
For short-lived work, such as an event poster, an internal presentation or a first look at an idea you want to test, an AI image can do the job. For a logo you'll use for years, on your sign, your packaging and your website, it isn't enough.
If you have a draft you made with AI, bring it along; we can use it as a starting point.
